How to Draw Anime & Manga Faces: A Step-by-Step Guide for Young Artists

Anime and manga art is one of the most expressive, dynamic, and beloved illustration styles in the world. Whether your dream is to create original characters (OCs), draw your favorite shonen heroes, or enter drawing competitions, mastering face construction is your essential starting point.

Many beginners start by jumping straight into tiny eye details, only to end up with crooked features or misaligned chins. In this step-by-step tutorial, we break down professional anime anatomy formulas into simple, foolproof steps.

Step 1: The Circle & Jaw Construction Lines

Every anime head begins with basic geometric shapes:

- Start with a clean, lightly sketched circle using an HB pencil. This circle forms the cranium (brain case).

- Draw a vertical center guideline dividing the circle in half. Extend this line downward past the bottom of the circle โ€” this marks where your chin will sit.

- From the middle sides of your circle, angle two converging diagonal lines downward toward the bottom of the vertical guideline to form the jawline, then flatten the tip for the chin.

- Draw a horizontal guideline across the lower third of the circle. This line marks where your character's eyes will be positioned.

Step 2: Drawing Expressive Anime Eyes

Anime eyes carry 90% of a character's personality and emotion. Follow this formula:

- Top Lash Line: Draw a thick, curved arch that defines the upper eyelid. Make the outer corner slightly thicker for emphasis.

- The Iris: Sketch a tall oval beneath the upper lash line. Unlike realistic round irises, anime irises are elongated.

- Light Reflections (Catchlights): Draw 1 or 2 small circular white spots at the top corner of the iris. Crucial rule: keep both catchlights facing the same light source direction!

- Pupil & Shading: Darken the top half of the iris and pupil, then create a smooth gradient that lightens toward the bottom edge.

- Lower Lash Line: A subtle, small dash below the iris gives the eye structure without looking heavy.

Step 3: Placing Nose, Mouth & Ears

Anime features are famously simplified for dramatic effect:

- Nose: In anime, the nose is often rendered as a tiny triangle dash or subtle vertical shadow line resting on the vertical center guideline.

- Mouth: Position the mouth halfway between the base of the nose and the chin. A gentle upward curve creates a confident smile; a small parted wedge conveys surprise.

- Ears: Place the ears on the sides of the head spanning from the eye guideline down to the base of the nose.

Step 4: The Golden Rule of Anime Hair โ€” Clumps and Ribbons

The #1 mistake beginners make is drawing individual strands of hair like spaghetti. Anime hair must be treated as thick, sculptural clumps:

- Define the Hairline: Sketch a light guideline on the forehead where the roots begin.

- Establish the Crown / Apex: Choose the point on the skull from which all hair radiates outward.

- Draw Overlapping Locks: Group the hair into three zones: front bangs, side locks framing the cheeks, and the back volume that falls behind the neck.

- Give It Gravity and Volume: Ensure the hair sits noticeably outside the skull boundary circle, showing natural volume and flow.

Step 5: Clean Inking & Dynamic Line Weight

Once your pencil sketch is complete, inking makes your artwork look professional and print-ready:

- Use fine-tip waterproof pigment fineliners (0.1mm for delicate facial details and iris lines, 0.3mm to 0.5mm for the jawline and outer hair contour).

- Add Line Weight: Thicken line intersections, corners of the jaw, and shadow folds under the chin to create visual weight and dynamic energy.

- Erase your pencil guidelines with a clean kneaded eraser once the ink has fully dried for 2 minutes.

Step 6: Vibrant Superhero / Manga Coloring

Whether using alcohol markers (like Ohuhu or Copic), colored pencils, or digital software like ibisPaint X:

- Flat Base Color: Fill the hair and skin with even, mid-tone colors.

- Cel Shading Shadows: Use a slightly darker and cooler shade beneath the bangs, along the neck, and under the nose. Keep the shadow edges crisp.

- Pop Highlights: Use a white gel pen or digital brush to add gleaming highlights along hair ridges.
